About United Thank Offering
UTO is a ministry of The Episcopal Church that promotes daily gratitude and funds innovative mission and ministry projects worldwide.
The United Thank Offering was established in 1898 as a way to support Episcopal mission. The first two grants included building a mission church in Alaska, and supporting a missionary serving in Japan. Today we are funding grants all over the world. UTO has supported exceptional programs totaling about $150 million to date. The grants funded have improved the lives of thousands.
- Spiritual Discipline – helps people to notice daily blessings, thank God, and place a financial offering in a traditional “Blue Box” for each moment of gratitude.
- 100% Giving Model – every penny collected through annual “ingatherings” is given away as grant funding the following year. Administrative costs are covered separately by a memorial trust fund.
- Global Impact – have raised more than $146 million to support thousands of projects, including clean water systems, education, and community outreach.
2027 Granting Cycle Open
United Thank Offering invites 2027 grant applications
The UTO board announces the opening of it annual grants process for 2027, with a focus on projects that seek to connect churches, dioceses, and provinces with the unique needs of their local communities. Applicants are asked to observe three deadlines to complete the process: Dec. 4, Jan. 8, and Feb. 5.

Mathy Milling Downing (EDOW)
Mathy resides in Laytonsville, Maryland with her husband, Andy, to whom she’s been married for over 35 years. They are the parents of two daughters, Candace and Caroline. She is a nonpublic Title One teacher, with more than 45 years of experience working with children. Mathy has been an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Olney, Maryland for 30+ years, serving on the vestry, as Lay Eucharistic minister, lector, Women of St John’s, Parish Life Committee, and a board member of St. John’s Episcopal School and African Palms, USA. Mathy has been active as a board member of ECW, Diocese of Washington, DC., serving as the Northern Montgomery County regional representative before becoming the UTO coordinator in 2017. She became the Province III representative in 2019 and looks forward to continuing to serve the Episcopal community on both provincial and national levels.
