To commemorate the 110th anniversary of Harriet Tubman's death, Province III announces $1,000 grants
Province III of The Episcopal Church is seeking applicants for grants of up to $1,000 per diocese within the province to support commemorations of the 110th anniversary of the death of Harriet Ross Tubman in conjunction with her new, separate feast day on the Episcopal Calendar of the Church Year on March 10.
Episcopal parishes, groups, or other communities of faith within Province III are encouraged to apply for these grants in order to support a local commemoration, whether oriented as worship, education, formation, or historical resources.
C007 - Designate March 10 as the Date to Commemorate Harriet Ross Tubman, proposed by Province III and passed by the 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church, encourages all dioceses and parishes, in cooperation with other judicatories and local communities of faith, to honor Harriet Ross Tubman on the 110th anniversary of her death (March 10, 2023) in a worship service on or close to that date.
At its fall meeting, Province III Council passed a resolution to provide $1,000 in funding per diocese to support commemorations of the 110th anniversary of the death of Harriet Ross Tubman. The Council established a committee made up of members from across the Province including Ellyn Crawford of the Diocese of Virginia, Matthew Taylor of the Diocese of Washington, the Rev. Sean Mullen of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, and the Ven. Ruth Elder of the Diocese of Maryland, to administer the grant process.
The Grant Committee will be assessing applicants on the proposed commemoration’s expected reach, collaboration with other parishes, churches, and other entities, and creativity.
We are excited to have received several applications for commemorations already. Applications will be accepted (located here) through June 1, 2023, for commemorations through July 20, 2024. The recipients of the first round of grants will be publicly announced on July 20, 2023, the original date of the commemoration of Harriet Ross Tubman along with the other social reformers.
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars, to change the world,” Harriet Tubman.
